What is Corten Steel?

Corten (also known as COR-TEN or weathering steel) forms a protective rusted coating over time which requires zero maintenance while adding a beautiful patina to the piece. The name arises from the main properties of this steel, which is COR (corrosion resistant) and TEN (tensile strength). The surface oxidisation occurs to protect the steel against all weather without the need for painting or treatment

Your newly cut piece will be sent to you in it’s starting grey steel form, but will rust over the next 3-6 months without any treatment. If needed, you can speed up the weathering process by:

  • Watering the piece daily - regular tap water is perfect!

  • Spray with a mixture of water, salt and vinegar. Allow the steel to dry fully between applications.

  • Keep the piece out of direct sunlight allowing the water to dry off more slowly.
